Hijama/cupping has been around for many centuries. Historical evidence suggests Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Arabs have all been in practice using different methods and techniques but all with the same intention.

Today cupping is no longer considered ‘traditional healing’ and instead has now become an affordable form of healing without medication involved. Popular with athletes such as Step Curry, Micheal Phelps, James Harrison and many more they have all taken to this remedy as it’s serves great for muscle tension, revitalizing the blood and over all well being. Celebrities have also begun enjoying the amazing benefits cupping has to offer.

James Harrison

Let’s not let the celebrities steer attention away from a practice that is also so beneficial Islamically. Hijama is simply a Sunnah (A practice of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH) in Islam and has so much reward for the cupper and patient – all done with the correct and best intention.

A Hadith (an Islamic teaching of the Prophet PBUH) says –

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said,

“How good is the cupper, removes blood, lightens the back and sharpens the eyesight.”

Benefits of cupping are:

The list is endless and I’m sure to get them all down would be highly impossible.

Here are some common benefits to remember:

Benefits of Wet & Dry Cupping

* Purifies the blood

* It’s a Sunnah

* Best for treating menstrual issues such as period pain, cysts, infertility, pcos etc..

* Fibromyalgia

* Aids in batting insomnia.

* Controls high Blood Pressure.

* Great for tackling migraines and headaches – just to name a few.

Dry cupping is an option for a person who for some reason is unable to get cut due to them perhaps being on blood thinning medication such as aspirin.

Benefits of Massage cupping:

* Reduction of Cellulite.

* Tone up muscle and skin.

* Release of tension in muscles and so many more.

Benefits of  Facial cupping (a personal fave).

* Brighter and healthier skin.

* Reduces dark circles, pigmentation and freckles.

* Smoother, youthful and supple skin.

* Tackling acne and scars and many more..

The main purpose of cupping is to get fresh blood to stagnated areas where the pain is and relieving that pain through flushing it out.

When choosing a therapist always ensure they are certified, being cut/cupped incorrectly can lead to further complications.

Always make your intention and always remember to entrust in Allah (alone) as everything comes from him.

Yours in cupping

Hygiene tips for women

Being a woman is hard. We deal with many various things on a daily basis from home, work and kids. So in this video I am going to chat about some hygiene tips for woman.

Many of us may struggle with ingrowns especially if we shave. An ingrown hair is one that’s grown back into your skin instead of rising up from it. Sometimes, the dead skin can clog the hair follicle. This will then force the hair to grow sideways under your skin, rather than up and out. Interesting right? If you wear very tight jeans or underwear, try to loosen things up too as this can also cause ingrown hairs too.

  1. Exfoliate your skin before you shave. (I use a coffee scrub: 3 tbsp coffee granules, 3 tbsp brown sugar and 1/2 cup slightly cooled coconut oil and 1 tsp vanilla extract. Mix in a jar and let it sit and slightly harden before in your shower for you use it for shaving. Note I only use this on my legs for shaving but I do use it as a general body scrub on other days.
  2. Make sure you are using quite hot water as the steam also opens up your pores for a smoother shave.
  3. Use a sharp blade. If your blade is getting blunt, throw it out there is no use for it anymore. Do not forget to rinse after each stroke.
  4. Shave in the same direction your hair is growing. This is especially true for your more private areas.
  5. Moisturize after you shower.
  6. If you do not want to shave try going for laser to remove the hair follicle for good.

The food and drink choices we make every day affect our health now and later in life too. So choosing healthy foods and drinks more often can help prevent or manage many health problems that affect women. The healthier the body the healthier the mind is too. The food and drink we eat also plays a part in the way we smell and the way our outer skin is affected too. Lots of breakouts? headaches? itchiness? Try to improve your daily diet today.

  1. Drink lots of water. Yes there will be many trips to the bathroom on a daily but you are also flushing out toxins and hydrating your body. This helps your skin hydrate and also causes you to crave less junk food. Did I mention great for your skin!
  2. Include the three prime nutrients carbs, proteins and fats. If you are over 30 you need to increase your protein intake to improve metabolic rate and calorie burning potential. Also, increase the intake of complex carbs. (these include: )
  3. Try to make breakfast the heaviest meal of the day while evenly trying to distribute carb, protein and fat intake. Protein and fat intake should be 15-20% of your diet, then have filling healthy lunch and light dinner.

If you are highly athletic or spend most of your time in the office or at home, every woman needs to maintain good nutrition. Not getting enough of each essential vitamin and mineral every day can reduce your reproductive health, and a nutrient-deficient diet can also harm your overall health and well-being. Eating healthily a few times a week is not enough to give your body all the vitamins and minerals it needs.

What your multi vitamin should include:

  1. Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium, which is important for bone health.
  2. Magnesium is an essential nutrient,it is best known for being important to our bone health and energy production.
  3. Calcium for strong bones and teeth.
  4. Zinc supports our immune system and helps our body use carbohydrates, protein, and fat for energy. It also aids in wound healing.
  5. Iron supports better brain function, increased energy and healthy red blood cells.
  6. Folate (or folic acid) is best known for aiding in fetus development and preventing birth defects. But great also if you’re growing out your nails, fighting depression, or looking to combat inflammation.
  7. Vitamin B-12 sustains our body’s energy supply by breaking down the micro nutrients we consume (fats, proteins, carbs).

Menstrual hygiene is somehow a taboo topic that many girls even maybe some woman need to understand better. If you are not doing this already here are some tips to help you along the way with your monthly journey.

  1. On your heavier days. Change your pads or tampons every four hours at the least. You can lessen the amount later on dependig on the flow. This helps you with less over flow/mess and even smell.
  2. Wash your vaginal area with water after your toilet trips if you are not a muslim already and practising this habit. Also when you shower practice good hygiene wash with a little soapy water around the flips and flaps.
  3. Wear clean comfortable underwear, tight thongs or underwear made of fabric that doesn’t allow your skin to breathe could also lead to infections.
  4. Wash your panties. Wash them even if you think you dont smell every woman has their own individual scent that is left on their underwear. Keep it clean ladies!
Vaginal Care

If you do not care for your vagina she could turn into the incredible hulk! and you will not like her when she is angry. Lol. Here are some tips to keep your downstairs looking and feeling as good as the upstairs.

  1. Do not Douche. Like seriously ladies. Your vagina is self cleaning. The vagina already has healthy bacteria that maintain its harmony, The moment you add new chemicals to it you are disrupting your system. Please stop this habit.
  2. Stop using scented soaps down there. Scented body wash may be great for other pats of the body, but it doesn’t belong anywhere near your genitals. It can cause dryness to that already sensitive skin. You really only need to rinse with warm water to keep things clean down there. if your not keen on going soap free stick with a plain, gentle, unscented soap.
  3. Pat your lady dry, no need to dry it to death with your towel. Gentle drying needed only.
  4. Look at her once in a while. Just because your vulva never sees the light of day doesn’t mean you can’t get skin cancer or other skin conditions down there. So check your vulva and the surrounding skin using a mirror when you do self-examinations to check for signs of skin cancer. “Look out for any new moles, birthmarks, or skin tags and anything that’s repeatedly scabbing or bleeding,” If you have concerns call your GP.
  5. Hello Lube, goodbye dryness. Lube is underrated and underused! You should be well lubricated for having sex because it helps prevent microtears in and around the vagina, which can become infected. Nothing to be ashamed of. Women do get d=self lubed when aroused but using a little lube never killed anyone, it will actually improve it and make it hotter!
  6. After sex, make sure you rinse with water first then wipe. Your cleaning all the dirt off before wiping it down. Less infections caused.
  7. Use cotton and breathable panties or hell go commando girl! It’s all about that breathability—cotton lets air in and absorbs moisture. While going commando well.. uno :p
  8. Do kegels it helps strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, which then helps reduce strain on your pelvic organs, and improves bladder and bowel function. Oh, and they can make your orgasms stronger, too!!!

Why you should cut your hair short once in your life

I always was the one experimenting with my hair from the age of 14-15. My mom was never one to say no to any color I wanted to try or hairstyle I wanted to do. But rather than feeling that it’s a daunting task to do I always have embraced change, and always lived life on the edge (if you could say) of hairstyles and colors. If you have not ever had a big chop or tried to go for an androgynous look once in your life, I am here to inspire you! Here are a few reasons why you should chop your locks off once in your life. Whether a buzz cut or a short pixie.

Change your whole look in under and hour!

If you’re looking to drastically change your look for probably under R300, depending on your stylist fees. This is the best option in the market. Walk in the old you, walk out the new you!

This year was the second time around I chopped my hair right down to around 5cm and gosh I felt amazing! To wake up to soft untouched damaged hair, was amazing. I never felt so alive. I hid behind my hair in most ways as society sometimes makes as though a woman’s beauty falls into her hair, but hell what is the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”, should you not judge a woman by her inner beauty too. Strong woman are not made by their hair and but more how they live their lives inspiring other woman too and leaving a legacy.

It is very healthy

Don’t forget once you chop off the locks. You are left with the most healthy and undamaged hair you probably have not had in years. I can vouch my hair is at its healthiest and amazingly enough I can actually see the natural color and texture of my hair that I never even knew I had. Shocking.

With shorter hair you can also change up your hair more often, in terms of color and styling. All take less time to do and to possibly undo. Lol.

Hair grows back

Let’s be honest hair grows back so don’t be in a panic. Hair is hair – only hair. Live a little! I have already done it twice!

Easy D.I.Y Facemasks

With more than enough time on my hands I want to share a few face masks that you can make at home and that are affordable. You probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry too! So when you feel like a bit of extra pampering along with your Netflix or relaxation time. Try one out and let me know how it is for you.

Ingredients listed below in the masks:

Tumeric – helps reduce acne and any resulting scars. The anti-inflammatory qualities can target your pores and calm the skin.

Plain Yoghurt – Adds moisture and brightens skin. It also fights acne.

Raw Honey – Speeds up skin cells healing process and helps fight acne as it helps balance bacteria on the skin.

Oats – contains avenanthramides, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe itchy, dry and irritated skin.

Gram Flour – helps gently exfoliate flaky skin and dead cells on skin. (Find this at most spice shops.)

Rose water – it has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the redness of irritated skin, get rid of acne, dermatitis and eczema. It is a great cleanser and aids in removing oil and dirt accumulated in clogged pores. (Find this at most spice shops.)

Lemon Juice – is a great antioxidant. It naturally contains vitamin C, an antioxidant that may help reduce skin damage and premature aging.

Milk powder – acts as a great cleanser. The lactic acid in it lightens and smoothens skin. It gives the new skin formation a boost.

Oatmeal mask

Mix up all the ingredients in a bowl, smooth a thin layer over clean skin, and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Rinse off.

Beauty mode mask

Mix up all the ingredients in a bowl, add one layer over skin, and leave it on for about 10 minutes or till starts to dry. Rinse off. Then use a facewash and continue to moisturise there after. This is my weekly and favourite mask!

Yoghurt and Tumeric mask
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt.

Mix up then add to your face leave for 15 minutes. Make sure to not just use tumeric on its own as it has the tendancy to stain the skin to a wierd jaunduce looking color! Rinse and then continue with usual face wash and moisturize routine.

Lemon and Honey mask
  • 1/2 Juice of a lemon
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Mix up then add to your face leave for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Continue with face wash and moisturizer.

If you try any of these masks. Tag us @mom_scaping ,I would love to hear from you.

Skincare mistakes (and how to fix them)

If we look on the internet we will come across many skin care routines across various Youtube chanels and beauty blogs. Ecspecially now the 10 step korean skincare routine has popped up, we are left trying to achieve #flawless skin as the woman we see online appear to have. This is not a blog post on the best skincare routine out there but rather a post on the most common over looked skincare mistakes your making on a daily basis. Let’s get that glowy skin!

This is one of the best items to change today! Your diet plays an important part in your body and skin appearance. If you consume more sugar and junk food this actually can cause you inflamation and make your collagen break down! OMG!

What to try:  Avoid high-sugar and greasy food. Im saying cut down on the drive thru’s and the cakes as much as possible, which shouldnt be hard because we are all on lockdown!

Eat more whole foods to nourish your skin from the inside out, and include your daily dose of vitamins through fruit and veggies and possible supplements of multi-vitamins if fresh fruit and vegetables are not available. Most important factor for good skin, hydrate! Drinking sufficient amounts of water daily is a key factor for keeping skin hydrated, young, and healthy. Below is a chart to help you see how much water you should be drinking daily.

Daily water intake chart
Leaving make-up on overnight!

Guys! Please please stop doing this! It is one of the worst skincare mistakes we make.

There was a study done in 2013, the Daily Mail conducted an experiment where one woman volunteered to not wash her makeup off for an ENTIRE MONTH (DEAD), and she continued to re-apply daily on top of the previous day’s make-up every morning.

The result: Her skin aged by 10 years. (This is serious)

Let us avod premature skin aging and acne build up. It may seem a serious task but it is worth the extra 10 minutes it will really take you, Trust me. Let us think twice and get our make-up off as best as we can. I have been trying the double cleanse method from Huda. The video is embedded below for those who want to know more. My skin has never felt so good.

What to try: Take off ALL of your makeup every single night before you go to bed. Here are my current products I use as I dont have the one Huda uses ( there are some variations in products but they are all listed in order of use of what i use currently).

Skin strategy charcoal make up wipes:

Micellar Water:

Lemcke Organic virgin coconut oil-

Edgars – Bamboo Muslins face cloth –

Just Pure essential cleansing oil-

Lo-Oreal paris pure clay detox face wash with charcoal –

Moisturiser: Shea butter raw organic –

Derma roller rose quartz –

Vaseline – for lippies –

Huda night time make-up routine
Less exfoliating

Yes exfoliating your skin too much you are in essence breaking down the skin’s barrier and your face could already be too sensitove or too over worked for this harsh treatment too much per week.

What to try: Exfoliate only 2-3 times a week at most. Your skin doesnt really need to much exfoliating I believe. If your skin feels a bit dry rather try using a smudge of coconut oil and a mask a few times a week. There are some great ones on the market currently.

Not using SPF

If you didnt know, SPF damage is the highest cause of aging skin. So get that sunscreen on and if you are exposed to alot of sun wear a hat too.

What to try: The easiest option for those out there looking for a quick fix it to buy a mosituriser with SPF already included. Nowadays you can even find make up with SPF in it even better! But be sure to re-apply sunblock if you are out exposed the whole day as one application is not enough during the day.

Cleaning brushes, sponges and phones.

Let’s be honest when’s the last time you did a serious deep clean of your makeup brushes and sponges, or wiped down your phone with some sanitizer? If you cannot remember this means you may be suffering from bad skin because these items are not cleaned.

What to try: Makeup brushes and sponges must be cleaned on a weekly basis ,ecspecially if you wear make up daily. If budget allows for it try one-time sponges, these are another great alternative (but are not the most environmentally friendly, unfortunately).

Here is a simple tutorial on how to clean your make up brushes and sponges:

Rolls with my stretch marks please.

Dear squeezable tummy rolls…

You are a part of my life.

You remind me that I do not fit in to this world of advertisement, social media and movies.

That if these things did not exsist that maybe I would be ‘desirable’ and I wouldnt be fighting myself on a daily to fit in to this warped world image of what a womans body should looks like. But I realized that these perfections do not really exisit.

You grew with my babies and you fell back when I needed to remind myself that I wished for my younger days and dieted and exercised like mad.

What I didnt realize is that the people who really mattered in my life didnt care about the buldge of my waist but rather the bulges of food we ate together as friends or family round the table, whilst laughter was spread.

This is what is important is happiness and acceptance.

Yes you move and jiggle when I laugh or jump, but you are a constant reminder that I am part of a bigger picture. The picture of motherhood.

Yes my lovely rolls you and I have been through it all, and I will appreciate and love you forever.

You are my womanhood.

You are my curves and sexuality, the thing my partner holds on to when we slow dance or when we make love.

So thanks for being there, and if that one fine day comes when that pin of how to loose belly fat in 30 days works. I cant say I will miss you, no offence.

Stretch marks are on 80% of woman around the world.

My dear stretch marks…

80% of woman have you and you are caused by a number of things like stomach stretching during pregnancy, a growth spurt, building muscle too quickly and weight gain. We have tried many creams to get rid of you, but how many have actually worked? Probably none.

But I have decided to let you stay because your remind me of only good memories. A map reminding me where I have been and with who I spent that time with.

“We can put a man on the moon, but we can’t fix a stretch mark.”

Joubin Gabbay, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills.

You are apart of me being a human, and how absolutely beautiful this story of you and I is. A story of strength, fear and sometimes sadness too. I am a woman who is real, diverse and a tigress not some photoshopped ad.

I am as proud of you as I am of my kids, that goes to my whole body. We have definately been through alot and we are still here. Our journey is still going and I am happy that I have learned to love you, and learnt to love those late night snacks too.

PS: you are the only tatoo that I will ever be allowed to have.

For flats try to go with a good pair of pumps or flat tackies as they will last you quite long and match any kind of outfit you choose.

I need you to slowly put down the faded mom bag, open the dustbin and throw it out! Invest in a good handbag as it is an item that will last you a good year or two before you have to invest in a new one. The best ones to try are the ones that allow you a bit of hand space so you can put in around your shoulder with decent space to move your arms around freely.

‘FLAWED’ by Serafima Serafimova

Serafima Serafimova has created ‘FLAWED’, a bold animation that celebrates the self-perceived flaws of women in their 30’s.

The animation reveals the private rituals we perform in front of the mirror to cope with our body-related insecurities, in the hope to encourage positive self-reflection and acceptance. The animation uses a pink color scheme evoking vulnerability, combined with rotoscoping techniques and cell animation to create tactile fluidity.

It reveals the insecurities of 20 women (including the animator herself) through the rituals they perform in front of the mirror – from flicking hair off the face to examining the scars of a mastectomy – in an attempt to encourage others to embrace who they are, as they are.

The idea behind ‘FLAWED’ came from a casual remark by Serafimova’s partner, pointing out  that she made a different face when she looked at herself in the mirror. “I became aware of the  fact that whenever I came across even a vaguely reflective surface I sucked in my neck and stomach and tilted my head to a more flattering angle.

I recognized that this was a futile routine I performed solely for my own benefit, which made me wonder if other women do the same to cope with their own body-related hang ups”. Reaching out to other women, Serafimova asked them to open up about their own physical insecurities, which in turn formed the main inspiration for the animation. She captured moments where they confronted their own perceived flaws in front of the mirror in order to encourage others to accept their own and lessen the negative impact, they have on their self-worth.

This animation speaks words even though it doesn’t have any. Impactful and meaningful. We all have insecurities and flaws and secret rituals we do as woman. It does not make us any less attractive or less a woman. It shows that we are all connected in one way or another and as woman we need to stand together to support each other and build each other up, instead of bringing each other down. Nearing the end of woman’s month, I urge all of you to make each month a woman’s month. We can only grow with the support of others strong, ‘flawed’ and amazing woman behind us.

5 oils to try today!

For the past three months, I have been using 5 oils that I have fallen in love with and will continue to use for a long time! Available at most Clicks and Dischem stores.

Argan essential oil

What is it? It is a rare oil that is high in oleic acid and linoleic acid?. These acids help acne-prone skin, reduces inflammation and increases skin moisturization. It is rich in vitamin E and A, definitely a plus for all skin types because it does not clog your pores and absorbs quickly into the skin with its lightweight texture. I use this at least twice a week as a nighttime moisturizer.

I apply one to two drops on my fingers, rub to warm up and then apply to my face in a circular motion and ending with a tapping motion from my nose outward to my temple, it’s a mini face massage. Be sure to use your ring finger as it creates the least amount of pressure.

My favorite thing for this oil is for my hair, its great for my fly-aways and keeps my split ends at bay when they need to be tamed! Down boy down! As it is not oily and great to use every day, 1-2 drops are enough.

Rose hip oil

Wow, this oil. Ok before we start this is not Rose oil this is Rose-hip oil and it has been amazing for my skin. I have not had one breakout since I started using it in April! I use it mainly at night and when I need a moisturizer before applying makeup. Its benefits include skin regeneration, skin cell repair, and skin hydration. Therefore, I opt to use it at night also because it allows the oil to do its work while I sleep. My skin is more radiant, skin tone has become more even and feels smoother. For a girl with freckles, this is a one-stop-shop oil for my face.

Sweet orange essential oil

Did you know? This oil comes from the peels of oranges, which means that the healing power will be enhanced by 100%. Awesome right! Because this is so powerful, I use a few drops here and there in different things. Sometimes I mix it with my Sweet Almond Oil for the smell and because Vitamin C helps even out skin tone too. Currently, I have it in my Orange Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

1 cup brown sugar

2-3 tbsp coconut oil

2-4 drops orange essential oils

As orange essential oil is an antiseptic oil and anti-inflammatory it works great in a scrub, and great when you need to shave, as your skin is pre-exfoliated for a smoother shave and you don’t even need to add soap! Not to mention I love this oil also because the smell of oranges reminds me of summer 😊

Sweet Almond Oil

This is my new body moisturizer. Every day after I shower on damp skin, this is my go-to! With a few drops of your favorite essential oil, it keeps my skin moisturized throughout the day and night. This is not a costly oil and it lasts me the whole month and I can change up the smells according to what I like. Rich in vitamin E, it a powerful antioxidant and protects the skin from UV radiation damage. This oil is not oily and will not leave your skin feeling slick, so soak up the goodness! Recently I watched a video of HudaBeauty talking about dark under-eye circles and how Almond Oil is amazing to treat so if you have not watched it be sure to watch her video on IG @HudaBeauty.  I am currently attempting this, and I will keep you updated on my progress!

Black Jamaican Castor Oil

I don’t know where I would have been without this oil on my curly girl journey! I first came across it is researching oils for hair growth and everywhere I read or watched highly recommended this oil, and it had to be Tropic Isle Living Black Jamaican Castor Oil.

  • Made from roasted castor beans crushed in a mortar. Water is added and slowly boiled over a wood fire. This method results in a thick dark brown oil.
  • It is rich in Ricinoleic acid also known as an omega-9 fatty acid. Which is known to improve blood circulation, which results in hair growth and hair re-growth.
  • It strengthens hair from the scalp allowing thinning hair to gain strength.

So off I went looking for this and when I found it, I said, ‘what the hell let’s give it a go’ and from April till the present, my hair has grown 4 inches and the look and feel are amazing. For me, it’s a must for all hair types and it lasts months! I have had it for four months and I still have a ¼ of it leftover.

Advice: use it sparingly as its quite thick and you only need a small amount to spread all over your scalp 1-2 times a week. Be sure to massage it in with your fingertips in gentle circular motions. Its amazing for split ends too.

Hot oil treatment: Warm a few drops in a heatproof bowl and massage the oil into your scalp and hair. Wrap a shower cap around your hair and let the heat from your head do the work for a few hours. Wash and condition as usual. Do this once a week.

Now I am no expert on all these beauty items, but I can guarantee you that I have seen a difference in my skin and hair and if you are willing to take the plunge to try something new. I would recommend trying one of these 5 oils first. Also, allow yourself time to see the benefits 😊

* All these oils range from R60 – R200 not so bad on the pocket and it lasts a good few months dependent on use.
